Reclaiming Indigenous Knowledge through Ubuntu/Unhu Teaching and Learning

Introduction

In the modern educational landscape, the integration of indigenous knowledge systems is becoming increasingly essential. At Afrisomi Education Hub (AFEH), we champion the Ubuntu/Unhu paradigm to foster an ethos of holistic, transformative, and emancipatory education. By combining these principles with innovative Finnish/Nordic educational approaches, we create a unique and enriching learning environment.

The Power of Ubuntu/Unhu in Education

Embracing Community and Compassion

Ubuntu/Unhu, an African philosophy, emphasizes community, peaceful coexistence, inclusiveness, care, compassion, equity, and equality. At AFEH, this philosophy nurtures a sense of belonging and mutual respect among learners, creating a supportive and inclusive educational environment that fosters personal and communal growth.

Holistic and Transforming Learning

Our approach integrates Ubuntu/Unhu principles with Finnish/Nordic educational methodologies. This convergence fosters holistic and transformative learning experiences, empowering students to become well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to their communities. By emphasizing both academic and personal development, we prepare our students to navigate and thrive in a complex world.

Early Education: Fun and Excellence

Our Approach

At Our Fun Learning Centres, we are dedicated to providing high-quality Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) that blends play-based learning with cultural richness. Inspired by the Finnish child-centered play-learning approach, our centers integrate Ubuntu/Unhu-centered teaching to create a joyful and impactful learning experience. We are committed to making early education both fun and meaningful.

Broad Services Overview

We offer various services to enhance early education, including licensing our unique Fun Learning Academy Centres, transforming existing learning centers, and providing reskilling and staff development programs. Our educator training program equips teachers with the skills needed to implement our innovative learning approaches, supported by a global community of motivated peers.

Educational Visits to Finland

Learning from the Best

We organize educational visits to Finland and other Nordic countries for organizations, educators, schools, and groups interested in early education. These visits provide firsthand experience of the Finnish Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) model, offering valuable insights and fostering an exchange of ideas.

Case Study: Zimbabwe Parliament Educational Visit

In collaboration with SahWira Africa International NGO, we facilitated a learning visit for the Zimbabwe Parliament’s Primary and Secondary Education Portfolio. This delegation, led by Dr. Moyo, included parliamentarians and Ministry of Education officials. The visit offered a comprehensive view of the Finnish ECEC model and facilitated meaningful discussions on how to adapt these practices to the Zimbabwean context.
